It’s weird – I hate the concept of the Pro Bowl yet I become extremely anxious for minute or two on the day the Pro Bowl Selections are announced. I always hope a ton of Green Bay Packers get picked – and often try to make a case for more players than I should – but I never, ever watch the game. I only read a game recap afterwards to make sure no Packers suffered any extreme injuries.
Anyways, we found out Tuesday that three members of the 2009 squad - Aaron Rodgers, Charles Woodson and Nick Collins – will be heading to Miami for the contest, scheduled for the Sunday before the Super Bowl.
I’m not at all surprised Woodson got voted in. He’s in the midst of a career year, arguably the most important player on Green Bay’s defense and perhaps the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year. Remember when the big knock on him was that he didn’t like football all that much? Yeah, me neither.
Rodgers’ selection didn’t really shock me, either. He’s once again surpassed the 4,000-yard plateau and has really taken his game up a few notches in the second half of the season. I suspect this is but the first of many selections heading his way.
Collins, I have to admit, was a minor surprise. He was a nonfactor for the first seven games, then a monster for the next seven before pulling another vanishing act over the past two weeks. Consistency is big in Pro Bowl selections and he hasn’t really had it. Still, it’s cool to see him get voted in.
One final note: You know who else got selected at the quarterback position in the NFC? You guessed it: Judas. Now, he won’t be in Miami for the game – he hasn’t actually played in a Pro Bowl in forever – but wouldn’t it be fun to imagine him and Rodgers on the same side practicing together for a week?
Imagine the tension there.
