Growing up in western Wisconsin it would have probably been the Vikings ….errrrh the Chiefs. A cold weather team, and frankly, Chicago was always a non-entity for our family – all outings tended to take us to the Twin Cities but… rooting for the Vikes – unpossible one might say.

My first awareness of football (memory is tricky) was the bookend losses to the Lions in ‘70, followed by SB-V and then Dan Devine getting his leg broke by the Giants… Red was a popular color in the winter, so I still think I would’ve rooted for KC Chiefs if the Packers were never around.

Since Gene chimed in, I figured I would give my two cents on an angle that wasn’t discussed. If the Packers did not exist, neither would their rivalry with Chicago. I then might gravitate to the Bears because they are a historic team and geographically close to Wisconsin. I am a huge hockey fan and compare this to Wisconsin not having a team and myself aligning my rooting interests with the then-North Stars and now Wild.

Anyways, the thought of the Packers not existing makes me sick. Thanks, Chris for making me ill.

If there were no Packers…hmmm…well, I agree with your point about how much the NFL would suck if they didn’t exist. I mean, think about how many times they hold the Packers up as the one true and virtuous thing about the league. I lived in San Diego for a few years, so I might root for the Chargers. But growing up, I always rooted for the 49ers when they weren’t playing the Packers, and kind of still do. I realize that’s a toolish front-runner choice, but I was in California during the Montana/Rice heyday, which is also how I ended up a Lakers fan (Magic Johnson/James Worthy/Roger Murdock-era Showtime). So yeah, maybe I’m kind of a front-runner. 49ers it is.

That’s awesome! Negaunee always destroys Marquette in everything (particularly football as the MSHS program is a total joke), but I’ve got a lot of friends from Negaunee and it’s an alright place. Marquette’s pasties are a hair better, I’d say, but that’s just me.

I guess when I was growin’ up, even though they weren’t great, they were intriguing…I’d have to go with the 49′ers. They spent their time in the pits after Steve Young, but we had our lows too…and now they are certainly a team on the rise again, they play old style, we know how to tackle football…like the coach. That’s my vote.
